MR. MOHAMED ADOW, DIRECTOR, POWER SHIFT AFRICA, CONGRATULATES ETHIOPIA ON ITS SELECTION AS THE HOST OF COP32, CALLING IT ‘A BEACON OF ADAPTATION AND RENEWABLE ENERGY LEADERSHIP
It is great news that Ethiopia is to be the host of the 32nd edition of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP32). Africa really is the front line of the climate crisis. It is suffering the worst and yet has contributed the least to the crisis, and it is therefore good to bring the world to see that first hand. Ethiopia is a good choice; it is used to hosting big summits like the annual African Union meeting, and as host nation, will be motivated to deliver a strong outcome that really helps those facing the impacts of climate breakdown.
It’s selection as host of the next COP is a powerful recognition of its commitment to building resilience, advancing renewable energy, and driving home-grown climate solutions. The country has long been a regional leader in sustainable development, with flagship initiatives that integrate climate adaptation into national planning and community livelihoods. From its Green Legacy Initiative, which has seen billions of trees planted across the nation, to its massive investments in hydropower, wind, and geothermal energy, Ethiopia is charting a path toward a low-carbon, climate-resilient future.
As host of COP32, Ethiopia now has a vital platform to amplify African voices and priorities, particularly around adaptation finance, renewable energy access, and climate justice. It could also spotlight Africa’s capacity for innovation and its determination to move from vulnerability to strength in the face of global climate disruption.
